Wellington has one of the worst morning commutes in the world for a city of its size but Auckland is still our most congested city. Figures published by GPS navigation company TomTom show Auckland’s congestion has almost doubled since 2014, with commuters spending an extra four working weeks a year sitting in their cars compared to if they made the same journey in freeflowing traffic. Still, Auckland sits well down the list by international standards, sitting in 47th for the most congested cities in 2016. TomTom measures traffic congestion by gathering data from its 500 million GPS devices worldwide, which feed back information to a database every 10 seconds.
