Takapuna get revenge over University in final

Central Leader - - WHAT’S ON - FELICITY REID

The Takapuna Ponies got one back over the Auckland University women’s premier cricket team by beating them in the final of the Pearl Dawson limited overs competition on Saturday.

Auckland University had beaten Takapuna in the final of the T20 competition back in Janu- ary, but this time it was the Ponies’ turn to lift the silverware - an impressive 187-run win securing them the title.

Captain Lauren Down led from the front, top-scoring with 74 in the total of 223. She received support from Kerry Tomlinson who scored at nearly a run a ball in her unbeaten knock of 48.

In reply, University were all out for 36.

The collapse is exceptional, considering University’s top five consists of a current White Fern, the competition’s leading run scorer, an Irish international, an Auckland under-18 representative and the captain of the Auckland Hearts.

When Ponies’ coach Chris Reid took up the reins, the Ponies were a young side that ‘‘were not necessarily going anywhere with any great direction’’.

‘‘We’ve put in work over three seasons to get these two results this year. We took little steps throughout that time, and sometimes we went backwards, sometimes we fell. But, looking back, I am really happy it has come about the way it did,’’ Reid said.
