Auckland Dio dominates Maadi for second year
Auckland’s Diocesan School for Girls has picked up back-to-back Maadi titles, becoming the first North Island female crew in 27 years to do so.
Dio claimed the Levin 75th Jubilee Cup - awarded to the winners of the under-18 eight 2000 metre race - at Lake Karapiro this month, securing the title by three quarters of a boat length.
They were behind for most of the race before they kicked at the 500m mark and surged ahead of Hamilton’s St Paul’s Collegiate and Christchurchs’ St Margaret’s College.
Dio head of rowing Rachel Williams said she kept her nerves together for most of the race but excitement took over in final stages.
‘‘We were quite relaxed watching the girls to be fair,’’ Williams said.
‘‘In the last 500m, when they started pulling ahead I thought we can do this. Then we were running down the bank to get the finish line so we could see it.’’
Overall, Dio had four eights crews in A finals - the novice eight, under-15 eight, under-17 eight, and under-18 eight.
‘‘I think that’s what shows a really strong club,’’ Williams said. ‘‘We’re stepping up to the top and it’s exciting.’’
Auckland Dio’s under-18 eight crew won back-to-back national titles at Maadi.
