Nigel Latta and John Campbell team up

Nigel Latta will team up with journalist John Campbell for a show that examines what New Zealand will look like in 20 years.

The pair will host live panel show What Next?, which examines what New Zealanders want for the country’s future, and whether we’re on track to achieve those goals.

The show promises to use research from University of Auckland’s psychology department, as well as the results of a soon-to-bereleased survey.

Latta and Campbell will be joined by a panel of Kiwis who are passionate about preparing for what’s ahead.

They include social entrepreneur Derek Handley, McGuinness Institute chief executive Wendy McGuinness, indigenous social entrepreneur Shay Wright, tech innovator Frances Valintine, and Tu Maia cofounder Sacha McMeeking.

The show will be broadcast live on multiple platforms over five consecutive nights, and viewers will be able to ask the hosts and panellists questions and communicate their views online.

The show marks Campbell’s return to a major free-to-air television network after his current affairs show, Campbell Live, was controversially axed in 2015.

He now hosts Radio New Zea- land’s long-running weeknight current affairs show Checkpoint and has taken it to a new audience through streaming on Facebook, YouTube, Freeview Channel 50 and on Face TV on Sky.

This time Campbell’s working for the competition, with What Next? set to air on TVNZ 1 and TVNZ’s web site.

‘‘To achieve the future we want, we need to make decisions that will create a country we’re proud to pass down to the people who follow us.

‘‘This is a discussion with New Zealanders for New Zealanders and I’m delighted to be a part of it,’’ he said.

Latta’s background is as a clinical psychologist and host of popular shows about parenting.

In recent years he’s become known for making documentaries that investigate important social and political issues, like The Hard Stuff with Nigel Latta.

He said What Next? was about telling politicians to build the future people want.

‘‘What if instead of waiting for politicians to tell us how the future should be, we told them?

‘‘What if instead of us voting for their competing visions, they had to build ours?’’
