More than 200 applications were received for the 21-member Auckland Council Youth Advisory Panel.

Applications for the panel closed on Monday with approximately 223 applications received from across Auckland.

The panel, established by former Auckland mayor Len Brown in 2011, will be made up of people between 14 and 24 from Auckland’s 21 local boards.

Its role is to to offer advice on the council’s regional policies, plans and strategies, reflecting the interest of young people in Auckland.

Auckland Council panels principal advisor Austin Kim said successful applicants served a threeyear term.

They get paid $173 for each meeting, or workshop they attended.

Travel to meetings by public transport would also be reimbursed.

Kim said all applications would be evaluated and only shortlisted candidates would contacted and be interviewed.

‘‘The mayor will then appoint the proposed candidates by the end of May,’’ Kim said.

Previously, either local boards or local youth councils would recommend their youth representa- tives to the panel but this year, selection would be made by a selection panel.

The selection panel would include a community member with experience in youth development, a former Youth Advisory Panel member who is not reapplying and a council staff member who specialises in youth engagement or civic participation.

Shail Kaushal, 23, the youngest local board member for Puketapapa Local Board said being a part of the panel could be an important turning point in a young person’s life.

He said young people would have say in major issues like housing, transport and employment.

‘‘It’s a paid role, in a way this is a youth version of the Auckland Council.

‘‘This is a great opportunity for youngsters in our community.’’

Kaushal said 25 applications were received from the Puketapapa local board before the Monday cut off.

Interviews for the shortlisted applicants take place from April 18 to 28.
