An Auckland local board is proud to have two ‘‘local heroes’’ serving in its ranks.

Chris Makoare and police community constable Don Allan were recipients of the New Zealander of the Year - Kiwibank Local Hero awards for the Auckland region.

The New Zealander of the Year Awards celebrate achievements of New Zealanders with awards presented in Auckland each year in February.

Other than the six main awards, hundreds of people from different regions in the country also receive special mention for their outstanding work in the community.

Makoare was one of 73 ’’local hero’’ recipients from the Auckland region in 2016 while Allan was one of 68 recognised in the Auckland region this year.

They’re both members of the Maungakiekie-Tamaki Local Board.

‘‘It’s great that two local heroes are in the local board.

‘‘It shows that the community has done the right thing and voted the right people in,’’ Allan said.

Allan was recognised for the police work he was doing in the Onehunga community.

He’s a normal sight on Onehunga roads with his dog Piper, talking to people in the com- munity and creating initiatives to curb crime.

Allan, a former tradesman, takes his job seriously, working from 6am until as late as 10pm.

‘‘I live in my community and I want it to be as safe as it can for my family, friends and neighbours.

‘‘The only way to do that was to encourage the community to stand up and be guardians themselves, increase vigilance and not create opportunities for offenders.

‘‘I felt unworthy to some degree about the award because I’m getting paid to do this work but I guess because I’m passionate about it, it’s reflected in people’s views.’’

Makoare volunteers at the Glen Innes Family Centre helping men through challenging circumstances.

Maungakiekie-Tamaki Local Board chairwoman Josephine Bartley praised the two men for their commitment to the community.

‘‘It’s a way of life for them - they are both very hardworking people, selfless and the hours they put into their work’s encouraging. We’re very lucky to have them.’’

Maungakiekie-Tamaki Local Board members Chris Makoare and Don Allan were recipients of the NZer of the Year Local Hero award.
