Residents call for consultation
Residents are anxiously waiting to see whether a controversial hotel development will be required to go through public consultation.
Seventy residents met last Wednesday to discuss a proposed $20 million five-storey hotel called Hotel One at 409 Dominion Rd.
The plot for the hotel is on the corner of Dominion Rd and Elizabeth St. It would have 60 suites across two buildings, connected by an internal courtyard, with two ground-floor retail spaces.
Because the hotel plans were being assessed by Auckland Council, the residents were unable to do anything other than discuss the proposed development.
At the meeting residents broached concerns about waste, transport, traffic and the road’s heritage.
Resident Paul Rogers said there needed to be a plan to address the issues surrounding Dominion Rd.
‘‘Everyone agrees there’s a housing crisis and a transport crisis but a hotel does not resolve the housing crisis and it exacerbates traffic issues.’’
He said he had not been able to change a window in his own home because of heritage restrictions, and yet a five-storey hotel was going in next door.
Auckland councillor Christine Fletcher said she could not comment on individual developments but said there should be public notification.
‘‘While Dominion Rd is an arterial road it should not be forgotten that it’s a series of residential villages,’’ she said.
‘‘I believe the issues of traffic noise, construction and heritage are ones that the community should have a say on.’’
Fletcher said a lack of public notification had also reared its head in November with the construction of a 103-room hostel in Dunbar Rd in Mt Eden.
The Dunbar Rd residents were left in the dark until construction began because council granted resource consent without requiring any notification, agreeing that project would have less than minor impact on the environment.
Auckland Council central resource consenting manager Mark White said consent for the hotel was on hold as the council awaited further information from the applicant.
He said a decision on whether it would be publicly notified for submissions hadn’t been made.
