Kiwi shot put sensation Dame Valerie Adams is not letting the upcoming birth of her first child get in the way of keeping up her training.

Adams and husband Gabriel Price are expecting to welcome the new addition to their family in October and the two-time Olympic champion told Seven Sharp about how she was coping.

After a ‘‘rough’’ first 13 weeks, Adams said she is now feeling good and is comfortable about the whole experience.

‘‘When you’re an athlete you tend to control everything where now this little human inside of you is con- trolling you,’’ she said.

‘‘So that took a little bit of getting used to but right now I’m feeling really good. I’m actually smashing training as much as I can which has been quite fun.’’

Adams, 32, said it was always her plan to have a baby after the 2016 Rio Olympics but she is still determined to return to competition in time for next year’s Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

Adams admits she has given some thought into the expectations that may may come with being the child of one of New Zealand’s greatest sport stars.

But she is adamant there will be no pressure at home to follow in their mother’s footsteps.
