Local fashion entrepreneur gets hands-on
Time is your richest asset. That is the defining principle that Richard Paki, a successful entrepreneur, lives by.
The 44 year old, who owns three fashion labels and supplies stores across Australia, says he is constantly looking at ways to manage time.
‘‘My benchmark of success is how much time I’m able to spend with my partner and three children,’’ he explains.
Richard was bitten by the fashion bug early.
‘‘I bought a $250 pair of shoes when I was just eight,’’ he says.
In order to finance his passion for fashion he started working parttime. Later he set up a cleaning business as well as a transport company. Eventually, Richard started designing and making his clothes from home – an enterprise which led to his three main brands – BBodker (sportswear), PGramma (high end clothes) and Sophie Simon (shoes and bling).
However, Richard wasn’t satisfied.
‘‘I lacked the basic industry skills – I was an entrepreneur who wasn’t quite the complete professional.’’
In 2017 Richard decided to study fashion design, at Sewtec Fashion Academy.
‘‘It made a huge difference to my life,’’ Richard points out.
‘‘I acquired skills like machining, cutting and pattern making, learning how to cut, sew and design properly for different body shapes.’’
Time management was clearly the biggest gain. By cutting the waiting time for an item to be made Richard was able to meet the market faster. Result: happier clients. Precision cutting also helped him minimise waste, which led to big savings in material costs.
Because Sewtec uses a lot of audio and visual aids, Richard feels the academy suits his learning style.
‘‘Plus, I’m a perfectionist and therefore tend to ask a lot of questions, which my tutor Jeannette answers very patiently. I have also made a lot of friends. I’m going to miss this place when I graduate.’’
