Rehab, injury prevention and mobility centre opens
The Orthotic Centre has been at the forefront of orthotic services in New Zealand since 1991. This year the Ellerslie centre established a rehab and mobility clinic that is
ACC registered as well as providing direct private services.
Named ‘Active’, the clinic also sells a range of supports and other orthotics aimed at providing injury prevention, serving everyone from weekend warriors to elite athletes. In many instances these high-tech products are unique to the Orthotic Centre.
Orthotic Centre chief executive Todd Bolton says the clinic is a ‘perfect fit’ for the Centre’s core orthotics business that also services Ministry of Health and ACC patients through public hospitals, medical centres, specialist therapists and physicians.
Put simply, an orthotic is an external device designed to increase your mobility, support an injury, or help correct a condition. Orthotic insoles and footwear are core solutions most commonly known.
‘‘We have 12 degree-qualified clinical orthotists working at our Ellerslie Centre, supported by highly skilled technicians in the custom design and manufacture of orthoses,’’ Todd says.
‘‘We already have the most comprehensive range of off-the- shelf supports, braces, insoles and special footwear in the country, which puts us in a unique position to provide a niche service, particularly in the area of injury prevention, mobilisation and rehabilitation’’.
Active is headed by Anton Kemp, a general orthotic practitioner but specialising in the sporting arena. He says that most athletes and ‘adventurers’ formerly had to face a hospital or referral environment in order to be treated, but in accepting private clients Active provides a much quicker, direct access service.
‘‘Our key activity is to help prevent future or further injury.
Our services include carbon fibre kits with which to check a patient’s gait, provide bio-mechanical analysis and assessment.
‘‘Sometimes orthotics are not required, but we can get people onto the right pathway of treatment or injury prevention.’’
The clinic’s activities are not confined to sporting clientele. It also specialises in providing orthotics to a wide range of diagnostic groups including diabetics, pediatrics, osteo arthritics and neurological conditions.
Active is situated alongside the Orthotic Centre at 616 Great South Rd, Ellerslie.
