Neil Finn’s solo album a live first
Neil Finn has announced plans to broadcast the actual recording of his new solo album, Out Of Silence, live on the internet.
Every Friday throughout August, Finn will be performing via livestream from his Roundhead Studios in
Auckland. The first three sessions will essentially be rehearsals for the fourth session on August 25, during which the Kiwi icon will record the whole new album in full view, live on the internet.
Finn will be joined in these sessions by a ‘backing group’ made up of family and friends, including Don McGlashan, Sam Scott (The Phoenix Foundation), Amelia Murray (Fazerdaze),
Tim Finn’s son Harper, Jimmy Barnes’ daughter EJ, and more.
In a video posted to Twitter on Monday night, Finn mentioned that the songs performed would also include ‘‘a few old ones’’, and said that viewers would be able to ‘‘communicate with us in some form’’.
‘‘This is the room,’’ said Finn in the self-filmed video, shot as he wandered around Roundhead Studios. ‘‘Every Friday in August, I’ll be gathering with some very good people - friends, family, excellent singers, serious musicians - and we’ll be working towards the recording of an album in one session on the 25th.’’
‘‘You can all watch, listen, as we lay it down in about three hours. Until then I’m just going to use the webcasts on every Friday before that to kind of work a few songs up. I’m going to throw a few old ones into the mix, going to let you communicate with us in some form - an interactive experience with any luck.’’
‘‘It’s all going to happen in this room - we’ll be full. Good people, good sounds - and by the end of the month there’ll be a new album. It’s called Out Of Silence, 11 songs.’’
‘‘Watch us make it. Watch it develop, follow the progress. See you there.’’
Out Of Silence will possibly be the first studio album to ever be recorded in full in front of a livestreaming audience. All four sessions can be viewed at Neil Finn’s Facebook page from 7pm New Zealand time on August 4, 11, 18 and 25.
Once recorded, Out Of Silence will be released on the following Friday, September 1.
