Shoppers enjoy a swill in Mt Albert

What goes better in the pasta aisle. A cheeky red? And switch to Sav for the frozen goods?

These are the questions shoppers will be asking themselves at Mt Albert’s new and rather decadent supermarket, Fresh Collective.

The store boasts an Italian wine-dispensing machine that provides customers with a glass of vino to sip while they shop.

Fresh Collective Alberton owner Steve McClean said the machine arrived in mid August and the customer response had been ‘‘very positive’’.

‘‘We can have both red and white on offer, meaning customers can try a range and match their mood,’’ he said.

‘‘Customers usually have clear favourites such as pinot or sav and certainly shop for occasions and celebrations, which is when bubbles feature.

‘‘It’s a great way for customers to try before they buy – and perhaps live on the edge and try brands or varietals that they may not have had experience of.’’

Currently on offer in the machine was a selection of pinot noirs: Rabbit Ranch, Gold River and Shaky Bridge, all from Central Otago; and Crimson Ata Rangi from Martinborough.

It pours 25ml samples - about a quarter of a standard drink. Tastings are at the discretion of staff, and only those above 18 were allowed a sample.

Fresh Collective Alberton owner Steve McClean says his new wine-dispensing machine is a hit with customers.
