Talk about puppy love. This Jack Russell, owned by Alexandra SPCA field officer Helen Saunders, has adopted these two kittens as her own. Mrs Saunders said her dog, called Doris, recently gave birth to six puppies of her own. At about the same time, the two new-born kittens were brought into the SPCA, after being found without their mother in Omakau. ‘‘I usually hand-rear new-born kittens, but it’s really hard work, so I just thought I’d see if Doris would take care of them, and she did,’’ Mrs Saunders said. And while it wasn’t a perfect situation for the kittens, they were doing well and Doris was taking good care of them, along with her own puppies. ‘‘I knew she wouldn’t be nasty to them, but I wasn’t sure if she would feed them.’’ Doris would continue to feed the kittens until Mrs Saunders was sure they could eat on their own. When they were old enough, she would be looking for people to adopt them, along with four kittens the SPCA had ready to be adopted.
