Join in the festivities
Christmas has well and truly arrived in Arrowtown and you are invited to join in the festivities and celebrate the arrival of a spectacular festive season.
The Arrowtown community has always celebrated the arrival of the festive season but this year that festive spirit will be a lot more obvious thanks to a new initiative funded by the Community Trust of Southland.
‘‘We are making it feel like Christmas is actually happening in Arrowtown this year,’’ says Christmas in Arrowtown co-ordinator Julie Hughes.
Julie says the Discover Arrowtown community group together with local business owners hoped to make Christmas 2010 the best yet with a week-long celebration planned.
‘‘It (Arrowtown) wasn’t festive enough in the past and because we have a lot of visitors and also because the town has grown, we wanted to create a festive Christmas and make people realise it is here.’’
The week-long Christmas in Arrowtown event kicked off on Monday and runs through until Sunday.
Julie says it is made possible thanks to a $2,500 grant from the Community Trust of Southland.
‘‘We wanted to be able to create something for people to come along and enjoy and take part in.
‘‘It also showcases Arrowtown and what it has to offer.
‘‘All of the shops have come on board and have decorated their windows and we’ve got fairy lights (supplied by the council) up,’’ Julie says.
1500 Christmas in Arrowtown colouring competitions have been distributed to school children aged 10 and under throughout the Wakatipu Basin.
