Known as the cornerstone of the Alexandra Blossom Festival, the Contact Grand Procession draws thousands of people to Centennial Ave as they line the street to view the colourful floats and vehicles on display. The floral procession and carnival atmosphere ensures a pulsating celebration and dazzling display of spring spirit. The floats, competitive and non-competitive, and other entries in the procession demonstrate the commitment from the community to be part of the 55th festival. Hundreds of hours have been spent by volunteers building and decorating the floats, with this year’s themes including Noddy, Noah’s Ark, Buzzy Bee and Transformers. The Alexandra Pipe Band will again lead the procession of intricately designed eye-catching floats, bands, walking groups and special vehicles. Nine floats will vie for the coveted title of ‘‘Best Float’’, while the popular contemporary category, which was first introduced to the procession last year, will be back again this year. This category allows for floats to be made of materials other than the traditional paper flowers. Another new category has been introduced this year – the ‘‘Crazy Car’’ category, which gives people the opportunity to get their old banger out and decorate it with passion and flair.
