Summer boat maintenance

Central Otago Mirror - - FRONT PAGE -

Spring is here, summer is just around the corner, and with this comes thoughts of spending time outdoors. Nothing is more pleasurable under the sunny blue Central Otago skies than launching the boat out on the water and enjoying all the activities that this past-time brings. Ensuring the boat is ready and fully prepared for the inevitable fine weather has already meant many boat owners have taken their crafts into Steve’s Marine in Cromwell to undergo their annual service check over by the experienced staff on site. Steve and Linda Pope of Steve’s Marine say their goal is to keep people’s boats on the water and performing well. ‘‘Just because a boat hasn’t been used for some time, doesn’t mean there is a lack of deterioration, in the engine.’’ ‘‘Fuel and Oil sitting in the motor for long periods of time can separate and block fuel and oil lines, causing very costly repairs,’’ Steve said. ‘‘People often think that because their boat is going all right, it doesn’t need a service.’’ Preventative maintenance is the key to hassle free boating. As with any motor vehicle servicing, the road test is very essential, Boat servicing is not complete without a water test, ensuring correct performance, motor height, propeller choice, steering condition, etc. etc. ‘‘This is all part of the High standards we set and maintain with our business and we pride ourselves on our thoroughness.’’ Steve’s Marine has been in the marine industry for over 30 years and have a vast knowledge of all brands of boats, outboards and sterndrives. Their fully equipped workshop is ready to service your boat now. With Christmas coming up their retail shop is filling up with lots of boating accessories, safety equipment and of course water toys. With consumers becoming more environmentally conscious, Steve’s Marine specialises in sales of Honda and Suzuki 4 Stroke Outboards. People are now focusing on ease of use, lack of noise and of course very economical, 4 stroke outboards are they way of the future. For those keen to take advantage of the knowledge and expertise from the team at Steve’s Marine, there is still ample time and opportunity for new and existing customers to book their boat in for a thorough check up or even to re-power their boat to a new 4 Stroke Outboard in readiness for summer. A free ‘pick up and delivery’ service is available in Cromwell, with the business open five and a half days a week, and also by appointment making it convenient for clients who can’t make business hours. All good things come to those that wait, and that couldn’t be truer for hunting and fishing enthusiasts in the Central Otago region with the Cromwell based Central Otago Hunting and Fishing store open for business and offering an extensive selection of goods for a variety of outdoor past-times. Owner Larry said that they pride themselves on the service and advice they give to their customers when they walk through their doors which have been open for nearly twelve months ‘‘We aren’t just a store which is there to sell stuff,’’ he said. ‘‘We are there to help and advise, and are happy to pass on the local knowledge to our customers, from the vagaries of the fishing locations, to the seasonal changes which are experienced area.’’ Larry said that the Central Otago Hunting and Fishing store is a ‘one-stop shop’ for everything to do with fishing – except for the boat. While there is nothing especially innovative for the upcoming fishing season, Larry says that most of the gear in stock has been updated and improved, with the added bonus of being cheaper than last season because of the NZ dollar exchange rate. Add into this some exciting deals such as the trolling Combo for boat fishermen, where the purchase of Rod, Reel and Leadline as a package, works out to be much cheaper than if buying them individually. With staff members who are very keen fishermen themselves and as

in the passionate about the outdoors as their customers, then the advice which is readily available is extensive and supportive. Larry said this particularly helps customers to make the best purchasing decisions to suit all skill and age levels and fishing interests. Add to this the store’s buying power and great value-formoney deals, then the list of happy clients is extensive. While the current focus is on the upcoming fishing season, the business also caters for other outdoor interests and forms an important part of their business, with an extensive range of essentials stocked for hunters, trampers and camping enthusiasts. This can be anything from boots and clothing, freeze dried meals and gazebos through to tents. Larry says that their base in Cromwell also means they are central to all of Central Otago – from the Roxburgh district to the south through to Wanaka – as well as being important for those holiday makers that venture into the area. Supporting local groups and individuals is also an integral part of their business which Larry says they are delighted to do.
