Efficient home heating systems
Warm and Cool are specialists in efficient heating systems. Their primary focus is infloor, water-fed central heating systems. Traditionally these systems have used fossil fuel heat sources such as coal, diesel and wood pellets but both the unit price and the pollution factor have pushed these choices further out of favour with many potential clients. During the past three years Warm and Cool have moved to high efficiency aerothermal (airto-water) heat pumps. The inverter technology enables a heat pump to moderate the electrical input according to the energy demand from the infloor system and the use of night-rate electricity tariffs makes this form of energy very affordable. People are often worried about the ability of heat pumps to perform in cold conditions but that issue is now a thing of the past. Warm and Cool’s heat pumps operate effectively down to -20 or -25C and the ability to operate strongly around 0C has allowed this technology to be installed in Queenstown and Wanaka during the past two years, with great results. Warm and Cool prefer aerothermal heat pumps over geothermal (ground source) heat pumps as they have a much lower installation cost and higher overall efficiencies. Warm and Cool have recently completed an Eco-hybrid house on the Taieri Plains, near Mosgiel. This house combines solar energy and an inverter heat pump to provide a full central heating system and domestic hot water heating at an incredibly low operating price. Because it uses cleanly generated electricity at high efficiencies and the natural input of solar energy, the emissions from this house are zero, which makes it kind on the environment as well.
