Tips:

Eat first before drinking. Drinking on an empty stomach is asking for trouble.

Space all drinks with water, more food, and lots of conversation.

Team up with a colleague so you can alert each other if things start to go pear-shaped.

Judge the tone. If it’s a kicking party, let your hair down a little. If it’s a quiet dinner party, maybe not so much. Be aware of your limits and keep in mind that you’re still at work. Loud swearing and countless shots will be noticed by the boss.

If you see a co-worker overdoing the drinking, step in and help them out.

No matter how you feel about your job, now is not the time for a whinge.

Turn up on time the next day. Your absence will be noticed.

The drunker you get, the more likely you are to do something that you’ll regret.

Leave your ‘‘mates’’ at home.
