Imagine 100,000 people across New Zealand sharing lunch, celebrating children, kindergarten and community. This is a national New Zealand wide kindergarten event to celebrate children, build relationships in the community, and raise awareness of the benefits of high-quality kindergarten. All seven Central Otago Kindergartens will celebrate the Long Lunch. Maniototo, Wakatipu and Cromwell kindergartens will celebrate on Friday 2 March and Frankton, Hawea, Alexandra and Terrace kindergartens will celebrate on Sunday, March 4, 2012, International Children’s Day in New Zealand. Here’s more about our Kindergartens’ Long Lunch events : Maniototo Kindergarten: A Teddy Bears picnic and children’s games at Naseby domain from 10am to 1pm; Cromwell Kindergarten: A long subway sandwich picnic from 12.45 at the kindergarten inviting families, waiting list, new entrant teachers, neighbours; Wakatipu Kindergarten: All families, including waiting list families, will be invited on the Friday to join us at kindergarten for a picnic lunch from 12.45 pm. Ice blocks for the children and face painting and balloons. Alexandra and Terrace Kindergartens: Bears, bubbles and balloons Teddy Bears picnic. Bring along your picnic and join in the fun! Face painting, bouncy castle and more. 11am to 1pm. Alexandra Pioneer Park, between courts and the Rose Garden. Hawea Kindergarten: Planning a series of old fashioned races i.e. egg and spoon, three-legged, running and sack races to be followed by a bring your own picnic lunch at the kindergarten from 11am until 1pm. Frankton Kindergarten: A family bring your own picnic lunch at the kindergarten from 11.30am to 1.30pm. There will be a lolly scramble and ice blocks for the children. This year, over the weekend of May 4-6, the Central Otago Kindergarten Association will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the Association. Alexandra was the first kindergarten to come under its umbrella. Initially based in Alexandra Presbyterian Hall, the kindergarten moved into their new building in November 1956. Terrace kindergarten in Alexandra and Cromwell kindergarten followed in 1979. Wakatipu Kindergarten came on board from the Southland Association in 1995, followed closely in 1996, by the newly built Frankton Kindergarten. Hawea kindergarten opened in January of 2008, and this year will see the opening of the Maniototo kindergarten in Ranfurly. The programme of events planned over the weekend include a Friday evening cocktail hour, a Saturday morning tea followed by three different options of bus tours to kindergartens, and a Sunday celebration lunch and cake cutting ceremony.
