Creating your own wetland

Central Otago Mirror - - FRONT PAGE -

Do you dream of your land having its own pond teeming with waterfowl? Have you considered turning a swampy gully into a wetland that provides hunting opportunities and adds a great aesthetic feature to your property? If so Fish & Game want to help you.

Both Otago and Southland Fish and Game have a programme to advise and financially assist you with the development of a wetland or pond. A pool of money from financial penalties imposed on hunters breaking the rules has been set aside to assist with wetland creation. A contribution of $1,000 will be provided to approved works following identification of a suitable site and completion of earthworks. $1,000 equates to about a day’s hire of a 12 tonne digger.

There is no requirement for landholders taking up the financial incentive to make their wetland or pond available to the public for access or hunting, or have special covenanted conditions imposed.

Please contact the Otago Region on 03 4779076 or Southland on 03 2159117 if you wish to discuss a proposal or acquire other information.
