One of NZ’S most desirable destinations

The name Wanaka comes from Oanaka, meaning ’place of Anaka’ in Maori (Anaka was a Maori chief). And Wanaka is definitely a chief amongst destinations - a ’year round’ scenic place to visit or live - regardless which of the four seasons is currently being experienced. Wanaka, is in the heart of New Zealand’s southern lakes region, and is the gateway to Mount Aspiring National Park, the West Coast, Central Otago, and the setting for many enjoyable activities across all four seasons. It’s a destination for snow and scenery, walks and wineries, aeronautics and adventure, and history and heritage. Add to this Wanaka’s tranquil lake, majestic mountains, pleasant climate, sporting options and numerous other activities and major events held year round, from the Wanaka A and P show through to the scintillating ’Warbirds’ - and the town is a virtual mecca for many to enjoy. Whether it is for a weekend or a week, then time spent in Wanaka will not only recharge the batteries, but will generate wonderful memories and undoubtedly begin a love affair with the area which will last forever. There is just so much to do and enjoy in Wanaka and the surrounding area all year round, but with Winter finally here Wanaka is a perfect hub for a winter holiday. It is a Winter paradise amidst an awe inspiring scenic winter wonderland and definitely a favourite destination for those passionate about their skiing and snowboarding which is available on several nearby slopes. To be concise, then the Lake Wanaka region is a complete winter sports destination in a world class ski area. The premier ski fields of Treble Cone and Cardrona, along with New Zealand’s only Nordic ski area, Snow Farm and the dedicated freestylers haven of Snow Park are all within easy travelling distance of Wanaka, making the town with its picturesque setting around the Lake, a perfect place to visit and stay awhile. Add to this the clear blue Winter skies, the beauty of the snow-capped mountain peaks, the crisp and invigorating Winter days then it’s almost like being in Paradise. Wanaka really has a charm all of its own.
