Central Otago Mirror - - CENTRAL NEWS - By MARY-JO TOHILL

What started out as a quick peep in the real estate agent’s window turned into a four-year stay for Alexandra Salvation Army’s ministries co-ordinator Laurie Davies. Celebrating his retirement at a special morning tea last week, Mr Davies recalled when he and wife Anne were ‘‘just passing through’’ Alexandra on holiday from their former Auckland base. They saw a couple of houses up for sale, and before they knew it, they had bought one of them. Mr Davies threw himself into the community, and because of his Christian beliefs, joined the Salvation Army, doing food bank management and follow ups on alcohol and drug programmes. ‘‘We just love it here. We should have been here 10 years earlier.’’ The Davies are setting off on a world trip, but plan to return to spend their retirement in Alexandra.
