Pair bring Pulse to town
If you’re a fitness-holic what do you do? Open your own gym of course.
That’s what Camille O’Connor and Helen Bond have done this week in Alexandra with Pulse Fitness, bringing a big-city-style gym to a small town.
Former Otago NPC netball captain and qualified personal trainer, Alexandra-born and bred Mrs O’Connor said she had always dreamed of operating her own premises, and since returning home nine years ago with husband Shayne, was waiting for the right person to come along with the same passion who could teach group fitness.
Enter Mrs Bond – Helen Bond – who moved to Alexandra from Hamilton early last year with husband Russell, and had been commuting to Alpine Health and Fitness in Queenstown three times a week to teach Les Mills franchise classes.
In a perfect marriage of skills, the two women decided to go into partnership. They soon found out they had more in common than the gym. Not only do both women have four children, they share the same birthday, November 13.
Getting the Boundary Rd operation running has been a steep learning curve for both. ‘‘There’s been lots of blood sweat, tears and moaning,’’ Mrs Bond said.
‘‘Renovation has been the make or break of our relationship.’’
They also had to do most of the painting themselves, a torturous affair, Mrs O’Connor said.
‘‘Rest assured, I’ll be sticking to my day-job in future and not branching out into DIY.’’
But at least doing it themselves ‘‘made it our gym’’, Mrs O’Connor said.
What they painted was two group-fitness rooms and a 200-square-metre weights area, fitted out with equipment purchased from Pulse Fitness when it closed in Queenstown, plus a childcare facility.
Their aim is to be ‘‘ more that just a fitness centre’’ with health and wellness incorporated into their teaching ethos.
They kicked off this week with Mrs O’Connor’s ‘‘Active Mums’’ classes which run on Monday, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
On October 27, they plan to start a six-week summer starter, which will involve 25 sessions combining personal training and group fitness for limited numbers until they are fully permitted to cater for large groups.
They have employed two Alexandra people, Libby Hamilton and Simon Smith.
Proposed opening hours for Pulse Fitness will be 6am to 8pm weekdays except for Fridays, when the gym closes at 7.30pm, and Saturday mornings.
