Central Otago winegrowing pioneer Alan Brady was awarded the prestigious honour of a Queenstown Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement Award at the weekend. About 300 people attended the chamber’s 2012 business awards gala dinner at the Millennium Queenstown where Queenstown Resort College also took out top honours, winning the Overall Business of the Year 2012 and the Professional Services Award. Mr Brady, who defied the critics planting his first grapes in the Gibbston Valley in 1981, said he was ‘‘deeply humbled and honoured’’. ‘‘It’s one of these things that come out of the blue. When you enjoy what you’re doing you don’t expect these things,’’ Mr Brady said. ‘‘When I planted grapes down the valley in 1981, the world laughed.’’ There were 100 wine producers in New Zealand then. Now there are more than 100 in Central Otago alone. Central Otago now has 1600 hectares producing about 4.8 million litres of wine. The industry employed between 300 and 400 fulltime staff, 10 times that many during harvest season. Even in his seventies Mr Brady showed no signs of slowing down, launching his Wild Irishman label in 2006, which sells locally and in Britain and Singapore. Queenstown Resort College chief executive Charlie Phillips said the college was ‘‘stoked’’ to receive its two awards, hot on the tail of the New Zealand Private Provider of the Year award. The college was established in 2006 and now has 350 students, with its hospitality courses among the most popular.
