Sports awards growing

Central Otago Mirror - - LAKES DISTRICT SPORT - By JESSICA MADDOCK

There has been an upsurge in the number of nominations for the senior sportswoman category of the Central Otago Sports Awards, co-ordinator Bill Godsall says. Nominations for this year’s awards are now open and clubs, coaches, family members and friends are being urged to put the names of local sportspeople forward before the March 1 deadline. Godsall said a few years ago he had to chase people to get any nominations for the senior sportswoman category, but last year there were seven ‘‘outstanding’’ nominations. He believes more women are wanting to ‘‘have a go’’ at sports they perhaps missed out on when they were younger and their usually gregarious natures meant they enjoyed participating in sports in a group. There are six categories in the awards: senior and junior sportsman and woman, team and coach, with the junior categories also gaining popularity. The judging panel, led by Cental Otago mayor Tony Lepper, will select the top five nominations in each category, from which the winners will be selected. The supreme award would then go to one of the five winners. The judges would also select the winner of the services to sport award and the junior sportsmen and women who had not reached the top five of their category, but were still very talented, would be recognised in a ‘‘junior roll of honour’’. Godsall said Central Otago’s environment attracted many world-class athletes, but this should not deter people from nominating sportspeople who had not reached the international stage. ‘‘A lot of people think they’re not good enough, or they’re embarrassed to be nominated and they think they haven’t got a chance, but I say ‘let the judges make the decision’.’’
