Wanaka’s Oxbow Aquapark will come alive to the roar of almost 50 jetsprint boats from New Zealand and Australia battling for supremacy this Easter. Event convener Chris Munro described the event as ‘‘petrol-head heaven on water’’. ‘‘This’ll be the first race we’re going to have on the new Oxbow track, which is the only dedicated jetsprint track to be especially dug out of a paddock in the South Island.’’ Although the event would be televised, it was especially good for spectators as the whole circuit could be seen from one vantage point. ‘‘We’re definitely hoping a big crowd will come along to make a day of it because it adds so much atmosphere to the whole thing and we want it to be a great day because there’s been nothing like this in the South Island for the last six or seven years.’’ The fixture will be the fifth round of the New Zealand Jetsprint Champs, incorporating three classes of boats, the light class, which have engines under 400cc and 550 horsepower, the Group A class, which have engines above 400cc but below 670 horsepower, and the super boats which have unlimited cc and horsepower. Food and entertainment on site.
