Bowls champion keeps rolling

Second title in 3 years and ready to take on the world

He might be New Zealand’s singles bowls champion, but Cromwell bowler Shaun Scott has barely had time to reflect on winning the title in January. Within days of his win at the New Zealand bowls championship in New Plymouth, Scott was back making the weekly trip to Dunedin to bowl for his North East Valley club side. It is a lifestyle Scott has become accustomed to during the bowls season, and there is more travel coming up for him over the next few months with the National Intercentre championships in February, followed by the TransTasman test series in March, both in Auckland. It is the second time in three years Scott has won the New Zealand singles title – he first won it in Dunedin in 2011 – and he said winning the title again was just as special as winning it the first time. The win was a chance to show the New Zealand selectors he still had the goods, after he was left out of the Black Jacks team for World Bowls in Adelaide last year, although he still remains a member of the 10-strong New Zealand squad. And though it was nice to be able to prove his abilities to the selectors, Scott said his main motivation for winning the title was so he could compete in the World Champion of Champion singles finals in Christchurch in November. He finished 11th in the event in Hong Kong in 2011 but would love to win it this time around, especially because it was being played in New Zealand. ‘‘I couldn’t think of anything nicer than playing a world event in New Zealand and winning it.’’
