The official opening of the $2.6 million Alexandra Community House on Saturday brings together under one roof more than 14 ‘‘not for profit’’ organisations. The building on Centennial Avenue, Alexandra, houses Central Otago Budgeting Services, Age Concern Otago, Central Otago District Arts Trust, The Alexandra Community Advice Network, Jigsaw Central Lakes, Plunket, Catholic Social Services, Anglican Family Care Centre, Cancer Society, Alzheimers Society, Relationship Aotearoa, Alexandra Clyde Union Parish, Central Otago REAP and groups within the Alexandra Arts and Crafts Incorporated. Central Otago Mayor Tony Lepper said it was a ‘‘magnificent building that meets the communities needs’’. He said it was a partnership between the community and the Alexandra-Clyde-Lauder Union Parish the landowners and joint occupiers of the property. It was designed by Parker Warburton Team Architects, completed in less than 12 months and was ready for occupation in December. Mayoress and chairwoman of the establishment committee Bernice Lepper said development of the building was due to the work of local companies including Breen Construction Limited and other sub contractors. Many people in the community could say, ‘‘my husband, father or neighbour also helped on this building’’, Mrs Lepper said. ‘‘The building has changed the landscape of Alexandra.’’ A seat positioned outside the community house was made by the ‘‘Men’s Shed’’ from ‘‘wood milled from the oak tree that stood on this ground’’. The first minuted meeting for the project took place in October 2007 and the completed building ‘‘came in on budget’’ from ‘‘an adjusted goal of $3.5 million to $2.6 million’’, she said. Alexandra Community House manager Carole Gillions said all tenants in the building had contributed to displays for the opening day. ‘‘It has been a long slog since 2007 but we are finally here,’’ Ms Gillions said. The lead funder, Central Lakes Trust, donated a total of $1,675,232 to the Alexandra Community House Trust .
