Cracker year ahead for Fat Freddy’s Drop
Countrywide tour lined up
Fat Freddy’s Drop trombonist, Joe ‘‘Hohepa’’ Lindsay, says the band had many highlights last year, but starting off 2013 with a countrywide tour should set them up well for another cracker. ‘‘We had a great time in Europe and festivals in Portugal and Croatia would have to be standouts, as well as testing songs from the new album in the Sydney Opera House,’’ he said. ‘‘But starting off the year with a tour that takes in some great venues with acts like Anika, Boh and Hollie and The Adults is going to be awesome.’’ Fat Freddy’s Drop last played Queenstown in 2011, and it remains a favourite for the band. ‘‘It’s always a great vibe down there, and we’re well aware that because of the huge international population there, we always have the potential to earn ourselves a few new international fans. You never know, someone from Europe or the States might see us in Queenstown, then next time we’re in their neck of the woods they might drag a whole bunch of people along to come see us.’’ But narrowing down the band’s list of songs into a workable set list was always a challenge. ‘‘Our songs aren’t short, and there’s quite a few of them now, so the set list is something we decide on every night. We’ll sit down, see how we’re feeling and basically whittle it down from there. But if the crowd’s already jumping we’ll play something real stonky, so I guess it’s all about the crowd as well.’’
