Now is the time to build

With all the doom and gloom in the press about money lately, you could be forgiven for padlocking your wallet, sticking it in a chest and burying it in the garden.

Truth be told, however, hard times can bring opportunity for the canny consumer, as struggling retailers and service providers start to reduce prices and experience increased availability to provide those very services for you. So perhaps, far from battening down the hatches and throwing away the key, now is rather the time to dig out your reading specs and begin poring the pages of the increasingly desperate discount mail that makes its way into your letterbox with metronomic regularity. Have you tried and tried again to find a suitable builder, plumber or other tradesman to carry out your renovation or building project over the past few years? Well now is the time to try once more and likely get satisfaction at last, as commercial projects go on ice, new build housing slows and tradespeople begin to find a few gaps in their schedules for the first time in a long while. Consider this also. There’s a long and noble tradition of thriftiness among New Zealanders, none of which has been forgotten during the recent times of relative affluence – just ask your grandparents. So why not reappraise that DIY project in the light of the new economic Zeitgeist? You might just find that with a few clever tweaks here and there you can change the global Whoa to your personal Go.
