Willowed River

One of the greatest assets that Central Otago has is the good fortune to possess the mighty Clutha River.

Sourced in the Southern Alps its waters are the blood of life for so many as it wanders its way across Otago to the sea. It uses many, abuses few. It has brought great wealth to Otago through its mineral resources, irrigation source, hydro development and commercial and recreational pursuits. But why cover it up with Willow trees? These are worse than wilding pines. In the few areas that SH 8 converges near the river you can only see a green hedge. Two areas in particular come to mind; Clyde and Alexandra and again between Ettrick and Island block. There are others. Remove the willows and let us view this natural landscape and for once live in a world of difference.
