New community sports centre on track
The Upper Clutha Rugby Club hopes to begin work on its new $1.4 million sports centre by the end of next year. The pre-project coordinator, Mike O’Connor, said the club was proposing doubling the size of its existing club rooms by adding on a second level. It would be called the Showgrounds Community Sports Centre. The existing building would become the changing rooms and a canteen. The second level would be a convention centre, catering for up to 150 people, which members of the public could lease for weddings or conferences at a reasonable rate. The existing footprint of the building would increase by about 40 sqm, to 370, to allow for an entrance foyer. Plans had been drawn and the club was investigating partnerships with other Wanaka groups.
