When shopping for chains, it pays to consider the following...

Where are you driving? What fits your vehicle? How easy are the chains to fit? Shotover Engineering stocks two types of chains and can find something to fit almost any vehicle. Each set of chains sold are fitted to the vehicle to double check they are the correct size and the customer is shown how to correctly fit them too. For the majority of people driving in the local area and accessing the ski fields, we would recommend our Pewag quickfit diamond pattern chain. They are easy and quick to fit and the diamond pattern of chain across the tyre provides an almost continuous point of contact between the chain/tyre and road. This minimises the slip and then grip that can be experienced with a straight crossbar chain. These chains come in two weights to suit either cars or utes. Pewag is a quality Austrian brand and Shotover Engineering has been selling them with confidence for 15 years. Some vehicles have minimal clearance between tyre and car body and will need a slightly different specialist chain. The Icebreaker ladder chains are ideally suited to deep snow ( and/or mud) e.g, unploughed roads or farm work. Although the chain is chunkier and gives the appearance of being heavy duty, it is softer chain than used on quickfits and will not last as long if driven on roads. These chains come in varying thicknesses and take a little more time and effort to fit. The price of chains can seem prohibitive to some people but when compared to your insurance excess or a bill from the panel beaters, it’s really a no-brainer. Don’t be caught unprepared, come in and see us early! If you already own a set of chains, now is the time to get them out, check them over and familiarise yourself with how they fit. Better to do this at home, before you are kneeling in the snow trying to remember how to fit them and then discover that your new tyres are a different size…. Shotover Engineering is the longest serving engineering workshop in the Wakatipu Basin and stocks a wide variety of spare snow chain parts. The workshop also carries out repairs to snowchains.
