Inspirational first for Central Otago players
An exciting chapter in rugby history and development has been kicked off in the Central Otago area, with the Mount Aspiring College 1st XV side participating in the Otago / Southland 1st XV Highlander’s competition. It’s an inspirational first for rugby players in the heart of Central, with 28 players sourced from Wakatipu High School, Cromwell College and Mount Aspiring College to make up this side. Fourteen teams from across the two provinces play in this competition, meaning it is a huge step up for those players selected in the team. This side has also enabled some of the area’s top players, aged from 16 to 18 years, to come together and combine their talents on the rugby field. Developing this team has brought with it many pluses, but an interesting benefit has been enabling the players from all three schools to actually represent their schools on the rugby field. Until this opportunity arose, those keen to play rugby, were only able to be affiliated to their local rugby clubs but now these players can not only enthusiastically embrace this opportunity but proudly represent their school in rugby at the same time.
