Shaping up to be one for the record books
The winter season has kicked off in spectacular fashion at Cardrona with the best opening conditions in recent memory.
About 120cm of snow fell the week prior to opening, which provided superb coverage over the whole mountain. This year is certainly shaping up to be one for the record books, and not just because of the snowfall. Cardona will undoubtedly be a ‘hotspot’ this season as athletes from all over the world prepare for the 2014 Sochi Olympics. However, it’s not just the internationals that will be turning heads at Cardrona . NZ has a strong contingent of athletes who are medal contenders for Sochi 2014 including the Cardrona born and raised Wells boys; Jossi, Byron and BeauJames. Cardrona will host four World Cup events as part of the Winter Games in August. The action takes place in elite level event arenas with relatively small competitor fields. ‘‘Its great because these freestyle competitions take place in areas 95% of our guests don’t use. Most skiers and riders will watch from the chairlifts in between runs.’’ Marketing Manager Nadia Ellis says. ‘‘The World Cup’s provide local skiers and snowboarders with a rare opportunity to watch the worlds very best
compete in our own backyard’’.
