Rain not a deterrent
A torrential downpour could not deter hundreds of Central Otago primary school pupils taking to the netball court and rugby field on Saturday for the Alexandra Primary School 7-a-side Tournament. A total of 83 netball teams and 70 rugby teams from across Central Otago participated in the event. Alexandra Primary School teacher Debbie Steel said the tournament, with a large crowd in attendance, was a great opportunity for different netball competitions based in Alexandra, Wanaka and Queenstown, to come together and test their metal and the competition had become an important annual event in the netball calendar. There were three sections in the netball with The Terrace School navy team winning the year 3 and 4 section, Remarkables Primary’s Gibbston team won the Year 5 and 6 section and Alex Kaka from Alexandra Primary won the year 7 and 8 section. The rugby sections winners were Under-7: Upper Clutha Rams. Under-8: Maniototo. Under-9: Alex Black. Under10: Upper Clutha Gold. Under11: Arrow Basin. Under-12: Waka Basin and Open Grade: Maniototo.
Side step: Central Otago under 38kg representative Jasper Klein makes a break during a rugby match against Mosman Barracudas Junior Rugby Club players, from Australia, in Cromwell last week. Central Otago dominated the match taking the game 64-nil. An under 48kg match was also played with Central Otago winning 44-5. Team manager Graham Johnson said the teams were unsure what to expect before the match but Central Otago used the home advantage to take the convincing wins. Central Otago teams consisted of players from Cromwell, Queenstown, Wanaka, Alexandra, Ranfurly and Roxburgh. The Mosman club is based on the outskirts of Sydney and has 34 teams from U6 to U12. Former Wallaby George Gregan is the head coach of the visiting club and also visited along with his 12-year-old son, who was one of the players. It is one of the largest junior rugby clubs in Australia.
