More soloists and duos in competition
New category in Smokefreerockquest
More soloists and duos have entered this year’s Central Otago Smokefreerockquest following the addition of a new category in the competition. Organiser Dan Kendrick said it was the first time in the annual contest’s 25-year history that soloists and duos had only competed against each other, instead of against bands as well. The Central Otago regional final will be held in Queenstown on Friday night and there are 15 entries this year, which is similar to 2012. Seven are soloists or duos. Eight of the entrants are from Wakatipu High School, five are from Mt Aspiring College, and there is one each from Dunstan High School and Cromwell College. Mr Kendrick said, given its small population, Central Otago was ‘‘pretty creative’’, with the competition always showcasing a broad range of genres and styles. The top two soloists/duos and the top three bands will be announced at the Central Otago final, along with five awards – the MAINZ Musicianship Award, the Smokefree Award For Women’s Musicianship, the Lowdown Best Song, the APRA Lyrics Award, and the Skinny Mobile People’s Choice as voted by text message. The first and second placed bands and soloists/ duos will then send videos of their performance to be considered for the six places for bands and two for soloists/duos at the national final in Auckland on September 28. The Wakatipu High School entrants are Angus Reid, Lucy and Izzy, Six Shooter, Euphoric Division, John Manulea, Violet and Jemima, Bahip and Isabella D’Aiello. Mt Aspiring College’s entrants are Fire Eyed Society, Oddity, Kirsten Jongsma, Phoebe and Mainstreet. The Unknown from Dunstan High School has entered, along with West Groove Company from Cromwell College.
