Bike star pur­sues dream

Ris­ing moun­tain bike star Con­nor Harvey has been se­lected for the New Zealand team to com­pete at the moun­tain bik­ing world cham­pi­onship in South Africa in Au­gust. The In­ver­cargill lad moved to Ar­row­town in March to start a build­ing ap­pren­tice­ship. How­ever, his sights are firmly set on mak­ing a ca­reer out of his sport. ‘‘Next year is my first year in elite and I hope to travel to Europe to com­pete,’’ he said. The 2012/13 sea­son was his first hav­ing ‘‘ a proper go’’ at rac­ing and he was as­sisted with spon­sor­ship from Ar­row Bikes. Dur­ing the sea­son he won the Bluff round of the national down­hill se­ries, was third over­all in the un­der-18 sec­tion of the national se­ries and thrilled to be named in the national team to com­pete in South Africa. He is now look­ing for fur­ther spon­sor­ship. He is joined in the team by Queen­stown women Alanna Columb, com­pet­ing in the down­hill elite women and Kate Fluker, com­pet­ing in the cross-coun­try elite women.
