New event open to all ages, teams
There’ll be racing of a different kind at the Highlands Motorsport Park this Labour weekend when the inaugural Highlands triathlon sprints will be held. The event, which includes triathlons, duathlons and cycling, is aimed at all ages, including toddlers, event organiser Terry Davis said. The toddler time trial will see the youngsters ride around the replica Bathurst race track with spot prizes on offer. The older children can also take part in the action with duathlons and triathlons also for them, and these will take place on the main race track, Mr Davis said. For adults, there will be a men’s and women’s sprint distance triathlon, as well as a shorter triathlon for beginners and a team’s triathlon for groups of friends, family and corporates. ‘‘The corporate challenge will be a great chance for some team-building among local businesses and corporate. ‘‘It’ll bring a bit of zest into company morale, along with some friendly and not-sofriendly rivalry among the businesses,’’ Mr Davis said. There will also be a 40km circuit race around the track, as well as a criterium road cycling event. Mr Davis said he was particularly looking forward to the cycling because the track was incredibly smooth and would make for some fast, exciting racing. ‘‘The main attraction for the cyclists will be the track as they won’t be used to riding on such a smooth surface. ‘‘It’s going to be a dream for them.’’ Entertainment would also include a performance from the Cromwell College Jump Jam team, music and refresh- ments all day. Mr Davis hoped it would become an annual event and urged people to support it either as a competitor or a spectator. ● More information: highland events.co.nz
