Review score at odds with comments

Central Otago Mirror - - OPINION -

‘‘[Sombreros] are getting people stampeding through the door . . . great plates of yummy food’’ – Grant Bryant, Mirror October 16. That is what I would like to get from your reporter’s recent review of our restaurant. That is the synopsis that makes more sense than the 5.5 out of 10 based on Grant Bryant’s review. I have to admit that I got a shock to see 5.5 out of 10. I quickly scanned the review to find the cause of this hatchet job score. Had we dropped food in this poor chap’s lap, had we insulted his taste buds, had we cheated him on his bill? No, he liked the food so much he chose to take the remainder of his generous-sized meal home and enjoyed it for lunch the next day. Grant enjoyed the margaritas too, they ‘‘totally hit the spot’’. He even forgave the apathetic service of one waitress as it was made up for by ‘‘a lovely attentive Scottish lass’’. The key to Mirror’s scoring of a restaurant is based on food, service and atmosphere which according to Grant’s written review we pretty much ticked all those boxes and then some! When did Grant get to add innovation, flair and thinking outside the box into the scoring system? – because of this new criteria, ‘‘Sombreros gets no points but earns heaps for great big plates of yummy food’’. . . 2/4 is not heaps Grant, and ‘‘the buzz on a week night leading into Queenstown’s dreaded shoulder season was pretty impressive’’ . . . earned a 1 out of 2 for atmosphere? Apart from the scheduled painting of the exterior and the tweaking of the menu to accommodate the changing season, we will not be jumping on board the innovation train. So the good news is that when Grant’s parent-in-law return they can rest assured that they will be able to enjoy the burritos that went down such a treat on this visit. Drew Harmer, Owner/ Manager, Sombreros Mexican Cantina The Mirror stands by its restaurant reviews which are consistently judged as one of the most popular features in this newspaper by our readers. However, in this case we believe the scoring was harsh and have since upgraded Sombreros to a 7.5, a score more in keeping with its food, service and atmosphere and our own judging criteria.
