Wanaka 10-hour race
The Racers Edge Trek Wanaka 10-hour race will be held at Deans Bank in Wanaka on Sunday. The event, organised by Racers Edge and Bike Wanaka, is in its third year and is open to riders of all abilities. The event sees individual and teams riding as many laps of the 10km track as they can in the 10 hours, with the rider completing the most laps winning. More information: lakewanakacycling.ning.com
Summer series under way
The Cromwell Summer Series gets underway this Sunday with the Cromwell half-marathon and 10km run or walk. The event starts and finishes at the Cromwell Sports Club. Other events which will be held as part of the Summer Series include the pub-to-pub Bannockburn gutbuster, the Bannockburn mountainbike classic and the Lake Dunstan triathlon and duathlon. Bowling club anniversary
The Clyde Bowling Club will celebrate its 100th anniversary this weekend. A social get-together will be held at the club on Saturday afternoon, followed by a centennial fours tournament on Sunday and a dinner that night. On Monday there will be a morning game of bowls followed by a barbecue lunch.
NZ Open tickets on sale
Tickets for the New Zealand Open in Queenstown are on sale for the tier one PGA tour Australasia event at The Hills and Millbrook Resort. The contest runs from February 27 to March 2 and includes a pro-am format played concurrently with the professional tournament with a total prize pot of $900,000. Around 20,000 spectators are expected to attend.
Cromwell to host qualifier for NZ Open
The Cromwell Golf Club has been confirmed as one of the hosts of pre-qualifying tournaments ahead of the New Zealand Open golf championships in February. The final stage of qualifying for the open will be held at the Cromwell and Omaha golf clubs at the end of February. Ten spaces in the final New Zealand Open field will be played for at the final qualifying tournaments.
Hockey girls sixth
The Central Otago under-13 girls’ hockey team finished 11th at the recent Collier Trophy Tournament in Wellington. The team won two pool play games, before drawing with Canterbury B in the play-off for 11th and 12th place. The Central Otago under-13 boys’ hockey team finished 20th in its Hatch Cup tournament in Hamilton. Meanwhile, the Central Otago under-15 girls’ team finished sixth at its recent under-15 girls’ tournament in Dunedin, losing to Manawatu 2-1 in the play-off for fifth and sixth.
Travel fund opens
The Sport NZ Rural Travel Fund for 2013/14 is now open to all sports clubs and school teams in the Queenstown Lakes and Central Otago districts. The fund is to support teams participating in regular local sport competition in weekends. Application forms are available from councils.
