Salinger giv­ing talk on cli­mate

Lead­ing cli­mate re­searcher and au­thor Jim Salinger will give an indepth talk about the im­pact of cli­mate change on food sup­plies, fresh wa­ter and pub­lic health in Wanaka on Mon­day at the Lake Wanaka Cen­tre.. Mr Salinger has long been in­volved in re­search­ing and mon­i­tor­ing cli­mate trends and leads an in­ter­na­tional team ex­am­in­ingthe ef­fects of cli­mate change. ‘‘It’s time to stop de­bat­ing the how and why and to look at what is ac­tu­ally hap­pen­ing as our world gets warmer,’’ Mr Salinger said. He re­leased a book ear­lier this month which brought to­gether lead­ing sci­en­tists to find out how chang­ing cli­mate would af­fect the world’s rain­fall, glaciers, bio­di­ver­sity, food sup­plies and pub­lic health. ‘‘A hot­ter planet will af­fect our ev­ery­day lives through ac­cess to food and wa­ter and health im­pacts,’’ said Dr Salinger. The book’s fore­word was writ­ten by United Na­tions de­vel­op­ment pro­gramme ad­min­is­tra­tor and for­mer prime min­is­ter He­len Clark.
