Bucking the trend

Central Otago Mirror - - NEWS - By CHE BAKER

If you have noticed a few extra folks wearing cowboy hats and cowboy boots in town it can only mean one thing, Wanaka’s annual rodeo is here. This year’s event sees the bucking bulls and darting horse compete at the enlarged and improved grounds near Albert Town which could now accommodate up to 6000 spectators. Wanaka Rodeo Club president Lyal Cocks said 180 competitors from across New Zealand would take part in the event, which included more than 15 sections, as well as a rider from Australia. The event would be a leadup to the club hosting the 2014 New Zealand National Rodeo Finals on March 8 and 9. The finals will see the top eight competitors in eight different sections ride off for the national title. It had been more than a decade since the club had hosted the national event.

Rough ride: Quillan Lowry from Geraldine is thrown from a bull during the Open Bull Ride at the Wanaka Rodeo.

Laid back: Joe Fentiman from Waitati in action during the Open Bare Back competition at the Wanaka Rodeo.
