It was third time lucky for Alexandra swimsuit contest winner Shannan McKelvey. The 21-year-old waitress strutted across the cricket ground at Molyneux Park with confidence, showing off her 1960s pin-up-girllook bikini. The Miss Alexandra competition was held for the first time in conjunction with the 20:20 cricket match between the Otago Volts and Auckland Aces on Friday. The competition had previously been held at the Molyneux Aquatic Centre. Miss McKelvey said she had preferred the swimming pool venue but the cricket event had drawn more of a crowd. She had entered the competition several times motivated not by the chance of winning, more for the fun factor. ‘‘It is so much fun. You get a real adrenaline rush . . . I was quietly confident (this year) but for me, I don’t enter to win, I enter to have a good time and watch the girls get out there and strut their stuff. In previous years she had worn a ‘‘normal bikini’’, she said. ‘‘I don’t usually go for highwaisted styles but I like this so I went for the 1960s pin up girl look.’’

Glamorous lineup: Shannan McKelvey, 21, of Alexandra (centre), won this year’s Miss Alexandra Swimsuit contest. First runner up wasEmmaBrenssell (left) and second runner up was Leitesha Pentelow.
