Courthouse Cafe faultless in this case

down my lunch with. It was bursting with flavour and I loved how it was served in a huge glass jar. If I didn’t have a coffee sitting waiting to also be drunk, I probably would have been greedy like my friend and ordered another one. My two friends who joined me ordered the honey chicken salad with macadamia nuts, aioli, crispy noodles, avocado and salad greens ($20), and a creamy spicy chicken toquito ($9.50). They both said their meals were delicious too. What stood out for me was the huge variety, and quality, of food to chose from. We dined during a busy lunch hour, but the queue was fast moving. People who were pressed for time could order something quick but scrumptious from the display cabinet as an alternative to a cooked meal. For people with a sweet tooth, a cake stand stacked with the most decadent of treats teases you until you finally succumb.

The staff are professional and efficient. The place runs like a well-oiled clock. They work within a reasonably small space behind the counter but I watched them glide, weave and duck between each other without stepping on a toe or bumping into one another. The place gets quite busy but they don’t seem to get frazzled by the pressure. they just get the job done and still manage to smile and make you feel like you are the only one in the line. We didn’t have to wait very long for our meals either despite it being a busy lunch hour.

The place has got personality plus. Inside it is intimate and relaxed, yet bustling and vibrant with lots of artistic and feminine touches. Outside, it is spacious with a large choice of seating – handy for large groups or families. It provides a perfect place for a dining experience on hot Central Otago day. The history of the site and building gives it an added X-factor.

A cafe and bar that lived up to its title as a NZ Cafe of the Year finalist. The Courthouse Cafe & Bar has charm, character and copious amounts of delicious food to choose from. I could not fault my dining experience. Hence the top marks.

Spacious: The Courthouse Cafe & Bar in Alexandra.

Sweet crunch: The corn fritters.
