When a cafe has been voted a People’s Choice finalist for the NZ Cafe of the Year 2013 you can’t help but have high expectations. If anything, you are almost more critical because the bar has been set so high. You expect a wow factor. Furthermore, a previous review had been critical of some aspects. As I was not the previous reviewer, it is hard to compare experiences. However, my experience was 100 per cent positive and The Courthouse Cafe & Bar didn’t disappoint. I ordered the cafe’s signature dish – the corn fritters with burn-yournose-on-the-pan crispy bacon, lick-the-plate-clean beetroot relish, a roasted tomato and salad greens ($18.50). The dish was artistically presented with bursts of colour popping off the plate, and the serving was generous. Most importantly it was delicious – the corn fritters were full of that sweet crunch of corn – not gluggy and corn-starved which I have come across before at other establishments. It is not hard to see why it has become the signature dish. It was a hot day, so I decided to have a Blue Smoothie to wash
