Lake Wanaka will be dotted with rival sail boats this week as racing is set to begin as part of the Wanaka Yacht Club’s major annual regatta. The Mitre 10 Wanaka Rob Roys Regatta and Inland Endurance Race events start on Friday and will run until Sunday. Club secretary Steve Dickey said about 20 boats, from trailer sailors to keelers used in etchell racing, would take part in the event. Most of those participating were from Otago and Southland, Mr Dickey said. ‘‘We are hoping for favourable winds,’’ he said. The event would include junior, under 18, and open events and as well as racing on Roys Bay a round Ruby Island race will be held. ‘‘It’s a great spectacle,’’ Mr Dickey said. The event also doubled as an ideal setting for those keen to take a photo of the lake, he said. On Sunday inland racing events would be held before a prizegiving at the yacht club.

Winning wind: Wanaka sailors Jeff Mercer and Kevin King, winners of the 2013 Etchells division of the Wanaka Yacht Club regatta, during the event.
