Ferocious attack witnessed by residents
Four people connected to an alleged serious violent daylight assault in Albert Town last week have appeared in the Queenstown District Court. Police received multiple calls at 12:44pm on Thursday afternoon after a group of males were seen assaulting a single male victim on Dale St. The man, who was knocked unconscious in the incident, was believed to be a Dutch tourist. Police arrested three males leaving the scene. Two males, aged 17 and 20 appeared, in the court on Monday charged with assault with intent to injure. A 15-year-old male, who had been referred to Police Youth Aid Section, was expected to appear yesterday. Sergeant Simon Paget, of Wanaka, said "the assault was witnessed by a number of residents who were concerned at the ferocity and duration of the attack on the victim." The victim was not found at the time of the incident but had since contacted police after reading about appeals in the newspaper. A fourth man, 18, faced charges of offering to supply cannabis and stealing $270 cash relating to the incident. All four were granted interim name suppression by Judge Michael Turner.
