Fe­ro­cious at­tack wit­nessed by res­i­dents

Four peo­ple con­nected to an al­leged se­ri­ous vi­o­lent day­light as­sault in Al­bert Town last week have ap­peared in the Queen­stown Dis­trict Court. Po­lice re­ceived mul­ti­ple calls at 12:44pm on Thurs­day af­ter­noon af­ter a group of males were seen as­sault­ing a sin­gle male vic­tim on Dale St. The man, who was knocked un­con­scious in the in­ci­dent, was be­lieved to be a Dutch tourist. Po­lice ar­rested three males leav­ing the scene. Two males, aged 17 and 20 ap­peared, in the court on Mon­day charged with as­sault with in­tent to in­jure. A 15-year-old male, who had been re­ferred to Po­lice Youth Aid Sec­tion, was ex­pected to ap­pear yes­ter­day. Sergeant Si­mon Paget, of Wanaka, said "the as­sault was wit­nessed by a num­ber of res­i­dents who were con­cerned at the fe­roc­ity and du­ra­tion of the at­tack on the vic­tim." The vic­tim was not found at the time of the in­ci­dent but had since con­tacted po­lice af­ter read­ing about ap­peals in the news­pa­per. A fourth man, 18, faced charges of of­fer­ing to sup­ply cannabis and steal­ing $270 cash re­lat­ing to the in­ci­dent. All four were granted in­terim name sup­pres­sion by Judge Michael Turner.
