Scott takes top SI sprintcar spot
Queenstown’s Jason Scott took the top South Island spot – sixth at the NZ Sprintcar Championships in Cromwell at the weekend. Thousands of spectators enjoyed an evening of high-horsepower racing by 27 of the country’s top sprint car drivers competing for the 2013-2014 New Zealand title. Cromwell put on spectacular weather for the event which has been held at the Central Motor Speedway only once before. Central Otago drivers had a strong presence, even though the New Zealand title went to Rodney Wood of Tauranga, and second and third to Aucklanders Dean Brindle and Jamie McDonald. Cromwell contract drivers who made it into the 20-car final included Daniel Anderson (8th), Andy Erskine (9th), Nigel Colvin (14th), Kris Gerard (15th) and Mark Evans (18th). Of a starting final lineup of 20 cars, 18 finished. In lap one Jamie Larson went into the wall damaging a tyre. Jamie Duff was forced off in lap six when he nudged the wall.
