Cromwell put on spectacular weather for the event which has been held at the Central Motor Speedway only once before. Central Otago drivers had a strong presence, even though the New Zealand title went to Rodney Wood of Tauranga, and second and third to Aucklanders Dean Brindle and Jamie McDonald. Cromwell contract drivers who made it into the 20-car final included Daniel Anderson (8th), Andy Erskine (9th), Nigel Colvin (14th), Kris Gerard (15th) and Mark Evans (18th). Of a starting final lineup of 20 cars, 18 finished. In lap one Jamie Larson went into the wall damaging a tyre. Jamie Duff was forced off in lap six when he nudged the wall.
