Fuelled up: Speedway fans will be treated to methanol-gulping, flame-spitting, 700-plus horsepower super saloon action at Central Motor Speedway this weekend with drivers such as Paul Wright, right, entertaining crowds. About 30 super saloons will compete for the South Island Super Saloons Championship on the Friday night and race again on Saturday in the Cromwell round of the hotly contested Elf Super Cup South Island Super Saloon Series. Central Otago, and particularly Cromwell, is well represented, although less by drivers than by cars. Of the Elf Cup’s current top seven cars, four have Hypermac space-frame chassis built by Cromwell-based former Super Saloon NZ1 driver Shane McIntyre. Wright is another relative newcomer to Cromwell who, from driving an older chassis super saloon last year in his first season of racing on clay, is now mixing it with front runners, notching up two fourths in the Dunedin round of the Elf Cup. Central Motor Speedway also has former NZ3 Mike Verdoner of Balclutha as a super saloon contracted driver. – Friday and Saturday, February 7-8 from 6pm.
